Urban Transformation Evening tour at 22-01
A Guided bus trip through Gällivare’s past, present and future with a coffee at the top of Dundret.A new Gällivare takes shape. Mining under Malmberget has caused a large hole to open in the middle of the old main street and for 40 years the population has been moving away from it. Now we face the biggest social transformation as the rest of Malmberget is being taken down and houses moved to make way for Sweden's mining company LKAB.
Take a guided tour ending with coffee and cakes on the top of Dundret (Gällivares mountain which offers a great view of the community and the Lapland mountain range) under the midnight sunshine. |

about the activity
A city move - why?
LKAB miníng company operates very close to the city of Malmberget. The Iron ore deposits go in a direction that affects the city. As LKAB’s production has expanded the city of Malmberget is being moved to other parts of the municipality or torn down. Today’s city move has been happening for a long time and it has affected the citizens for nearly 40 years now. In the last ten-fifteen years the city move has increased in pace and larger areas are being affected. The mining operation has now come to the point where we can see the end of Malmberget city. Within the next twenty years the city will be phased out in stages. Meanwhile the cities nearby, like Gällivare for example, will be developed. If all go as planned, the city of Malmberget will be phased out by the year 2032.
More about the urban transformation: LKAB is informing.
